Macquarie University には、7月から入学予定の留学生向けに Pre-departure Guide(出発前ガイド) という冊子を配布しています。
これにはオーストラリアでの生活から大学についてたくさんのことが記載されており、これからオーストラリアに入国して生活を始める留学生の手引書となっています。
さて、この Pre-departure Guide の中には、初めてオーストラリアに来た留学生が困らないようにと、いわるゆる「オージー英語」(オーストラリア英語)の解説もあります。
例えば、
●G’day:Common Australian greeting
これはみなさんご存じですね。挨拶です。
●Hooroo:Goodbye
一方これは「さよなら」です。
●Ta:Thank you
これは「ありがとう」ですが、知らない方も多いのでは。
●Cuppa:A cup of tea or coffee
「お茶しない?」という時に使いますが、これも有名ですね。
面白いところでは、
●Kamikaze:When surfing, a deliberate wipe-out
日本語がオーストラリアではサーフィン用語になってたりします。
以下はそれを抜粋しましたので、ご参考にどうぞ。

Ace:To successfully achieve or complete, e.g. “You aced that exam!”
Amberfluid:Beer
Ankle:biter Small child, toddler, tyke
B
Banger:A sausage
Beaut:Fine, good, e.g. “A beaut car”
Beg:yours Could you please repeat that?
Bloody:A word used to add emphasis in signifying approval or disapproval,
e.g. “Bloody hilarious”
Bugger:A foul, contemptible or annoying person, e.g. “Stupid bugger”
C
Chill-out:Designed or used for relaxing, e.g. “This is my favourite chillout
record”
Chips:French fries
Chockers:Completely full
Chook:A woman, e.g. “A nice old chook”
Crisps:Potato chips
Cuppa:A cup of tea or coffee
D
Dag:A person who is neat in appearance, conservative in manners, and lacks
style and sophistication
Daggy:Possessing the qualities of a dag
Daks:Trousers or shorts
Dill:A stupid person
Dinki-di:True, genuine, honest, e.g. “Dinki-di Aussie”
E
Ear:basher Someone who talks too much
Echo:Someone who reflects or imitates another
El cheapo:Of or relating to that which is cheap.
Esky:Ice chest or cooler
F
Fair dinkum:An expression for genuineness or realness
Footpath:Sidewalk
Footy:Football (includes Australian Rules, rugby and soccer)
Full on:Intense
G
G’day:Common Australian greeting
Good-oh!:An expression of satisfaction
Good on you (Good onya):An expression of congratulations or approval
Grog:Beer
H
Hairy eyeball:A disdainful or disapproving look
Hooroo:Goodbye
Hoon:A fast reckless driver of a boat or car

In good nick:In good shape
Inked:Drunk or intoxicated

Jackaroo:A hired hand on a large farm or sheep station
Jiggered:Broken
Jumper:Sweater or jacket

Kiwi:A New Zealander

Later:A common exclamation of farewell, e.g. “Later, dudes!”
Lavish:Extremely good
Lousy No-good; poor quality

Make:a quid To earn a living
Mate:An expression given to someone of close acquaintance, a friend; common
between males, but also used by females
Milk bar:A convenience store
Mozzie:Mosquito
N
Nick off:To leave; to depart
Nicked:Stolen
No worries:A common expression to indicate that everything is all right
O
On ya:An expression of encouragement commonly used in acceptance, e.g.
“Good on ya!”
Oodles:A large quantity; oodles of money
P
Piddling:Very small; insignificant
Piker:One who does not keep his/her word; someone who breaks his/her promise
Pom:An English person
Q
Quack:Any medical practitioner, not necessarily an inferior one
Quid:Generally refers to money, e.g. “He’s got a lot of quid”
R
Ratbag:A worthless, despicable, unreliable person
Razz:To deride; make fun of; extreme criticism
S
Sanger:A sandwich
Shocker:Something that is distasteful, disliked, terrible
Sickie:To take a day’s leave from work when not really sick
Slab:A case of beer
Spitting chips:To be extremely angry
T
Ta:Thank you
Tomato sauce:Ketchup
Trackie daks:Sweat/track pants
Two-up:A form of coin gambling
U
Unco:Awkward, clumsy
Uni:University
Ute:A utility van or truck
V
Vegemite:A yeast extract used as a spread commonly on sandwiches or toasts
VB:The name of a popular beer “Victoria Bitter”
W
Wacker:A crazy or funny person
Wanker:A self-indulgent or pretentious person
Whinge:To whine; to complain
Y
Yank:An American
Yobbo:An uncultivated Australian
Yonks:A long time
